| | | Religion & Spirituality | Home » » » Certified Organic, Coconut Oil, Expeller Pressed, 1 Gallon | | | | | | | Description: | | Wilderness Family Naturals offers a high quality certified organicExpeller-Pressed Coconut Oil as an economical choice for high temperature cooking. This oil is mechanically expressed without the use of solvents or chemicals of any kind. It is an excellent quality food-grade coconut oil that is NOT hydrogenated and contains NO trans fatty acids. Expeller-pressed coconut oil has a neutral flavor (because it is semi-refined), yet it contains the same healthy fatty acids as virgin coconut oil. This certified organic Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil is less expensive than virgin coconut oil because it can be mass produced. The coconuts are opened and quickly dried. The dried coconuts are then mechanically pressed to remove the oil, without using chemical solvents. Any free fatty acids are removed, the oil is run through diatomaceous earth, and lastly, the oil is steam distilled. This yields a very pure, uncontaminated coconut oil. Though not a virgin oil, it still melts at 76 ° F, is very light and creamy smooth, containing the same medium chain fatty acids as virgin coconut oil. People in Southeast Asian countries, such as the Philippines, use this as their main cooking oil. Virgin coconut oil is creamy white as a solid and water-clear as a liquid. Unlike virgin coconut oil, this expeller pressed coconut oil is an off-white to light tan color as a solid, and a light brown color when a liquid. | | | Features: | |

This oil is fantastic for anything that you DO NOT want a coconut taste to show up in, but I like the flavor of coconut.

This cooking oil tastes great!Jan 27, 2010
By Marti In wanting to enjoy the health benefits of coconut oil, we were growing tired of every baked item tasting like coconut and not having another healthy fat to cook in, other than butter (I have not been excited about the idea of purchasing lard to render myself!). This expeller-pressed coconut oil is excellent! When I used it for fried rice, my husband said it was the tastiest chicken fried rice he'd ever had. The ONLY downside to this product is that the container is a bit difficult to open, but I just had my husband open it and then we put a quart worth of oil into a mason jar...so, we will only need to open the container 2 or 3 more times within a year or so. This oil is a great value for the money! And I got to use my Amazon gift card from Christmas to purchase it!

Different oils, different purposesOct 22, 2011

>> Coconut Oil in general <<
As you may know, natural coconut oil has a lot of well researched health benefits. Many people (including health professionals) consider it one of the best (healthiest) oils we can eat. That, along with extra virgin (first cold pressed) olive oil. Coconut oil has the advantage that it remains stable (does not overly breakdown nor form free-radicals) when used for cooking. I never cook with olive oil for this reason, although I use a lot of it on food in general.
If you are not familiar with them, I am sure you'll enjoy reading any (or all) of the following books:
- Virgin Coconut Oil: How It Has Changed People's Lives, and How It Can Change Yours!
- The Coconut Oil Miracle (Previously published as The Healing Miracle of Coconut Oil)
- Virgin Coconut Oil: Nature's Miracle Medicine
- Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut
I've read the first two books in that list, and found them both to be highly informative. I see the other two also got rave reviews, so I recommend them on that basis.
>> Extraction method and taste <<
This oil, as described in the product info, is expeller pressed and partially refined. Heat is also used during the process. This oil is therefore not recommended for those wishing to maintain a raw food diet. I also don't recommend it as the only coconut oil one uses. Because this oil is partially refined, it does not have the distinctive and relatively strong coconut taste unrefined coconut oils. Most people I know just love the taste of unrefined coconut oil, but they don't always want that taste in all the food the cook with oil.
So this oil is great for cooking. It can be used for anything from sauteing to deep frying. With all else remaining equal, I can assure you the food will be delicious and free of coconut taste.
>> Health benefits... <<
If you wish to derive the full health benefits (and enjoyment!) from coconut oil I highly recommend also buying and using (in smoothies, salad dressings, sauces, body oils, hair oil, etc.) a purely unrefined coconut oil. Here are a few examples:
- Organic 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Nutritional Supplement : 1 gallon (128 oz / 3.79 liters) - 1 Extraction Method 1 Location Direct Manila Coco Factory : Not Multi-Sourced, Uniform Quality - Guaranteed Unadulterated
- 1 Gal Centrifuged Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
- Certified Organic, Coconut Oil, Extra Virgin Centrifuge Extracted, 1 Gallon
- 2 x 1 Gal Centrifuged Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (an incredible price for 2 Gal of centrifuged coconut oil)
- Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (8-Pound), 1-Gallon Tub
I am very familiar with the Nutiva oil (last in that list) and enjoy it greatly. I am also familiar with the product from Tropical Tradition, but I didn't find that in 1 gallon. Here it is in a jar: - Search on Amazon for "B000VVTTPA 16-oz glass - Gold Label Organic Virgin Coconut Oil" (I've reached my limit of 10 links per review) - it is a very high quality product, and super delicious.
Much of the literature (as you'll see in the above mentioned books) considers centrifuged coconut oil to be the highest quality. For first three in the above list are all centrifuged and organic.
>> My recommendation <<
Use this expeller pressed oil for cooking. I'm sure you'll love it.
AND use one of the above mentioned oils (or something similar, or the same kinds but in small containers) as a health supplement. In my opinion simply eating 1 to 3 tablespoons a day will provide many noticeable health benefits to the majority of people. Those with an under-active thyroid (whether diagnosed or not, or sub-clinical, which is very common) will likely notice a weight loss effect (assuming they carry excess weight to begin with... and the majority of American people do). Many people report more energy too, which can at least be partly attributed to increased thyroid activity too.
I live in the topics at present, and eat a lot of coconut. I actually miss high quality coconut oil here though, so I bring it down by the gallon from America.
Enjoy... and good health.

Fraud - NOT the oil pictured!!! AVOID!Aug 28, 2011
By Jon Norris I ordered this and did not get the Wilderness Family Naturals oil as pictured. The oil shipped was in two smaller 1/2 gallon containers which came unmarked and were not sealed. They leaked in shipping and ruined other items in the order, the shipping box, and other shipments around it. The USPO had to seal the entire box in plastic to contain the damage.Bad, Bad, bad.
I have been a Wilderness Family Naturals customer for many, many years, and I am extremely distressed by this fraud. I have returned the damaged, leaking oils to Amazon and notified them that the item was NOT what was advertised on this page. I should have been suspicious that the price was higher than the same item from WFN.
I will go back to ordering directly from Wilderness Family Naturals.
Wilderness Family Naturals centrifuged oil is definitely the best coconut oil I have tried in nearly a decade of using coconut oil. Their expeller produced oil runs a close second. I love their oils and highly recommend them, but definitely AVOID these second-hand fakes.
Amazon, you need to deal with this fraud.
