Description:

ChefShop is the exclusive source - as mentioned by Lynne Rosetto Kaspar and Food and Wine - for Organic Oatmeal of Alford. This organic Scottish stonecut oatmeal is not just a step, but a flight of stairs above the oatmeal we grew up with! Oatmeal of Alford is renowned for its traditionally nutty flavor and crisp texture. It cooks easily on the stovetop due to the nature of the cutting and can even be made in the microwave. For the microwave, add water as you heat (not all at once) and you'll get a great result! Add muscovado sugar or organic wild blueberry and apple jam . . . . . delicious! And it's good for you! As part of a low fat diet, oatmeal can greatly help to reduce cholesterol levels. But above all it is a natural food and our oatmeal product contains NO additives, preservatives or colorings. How the Scots eat. The Scots prefer pinhead oats to steel-cut oats originating out of Ireland. The whole oats have been cut into pieces and have a chewier, nuttier texture than rolled oats. It's flavour can be attributed to the final drying out process - carried out in the old fashioned 'flat kiln', which is believed to be the only one of it's kind used in Britain today. Oatmeal used to form the mainstay of the Scots' diet, and it continues to play an important part. It's eaten with meats, game, for breakfast, and with poultry as stuffing. These pinhead oats are also used for home baking in cakes, biscuits (cookies), oatcakes and pastries.

Features:

Organic, stone cut oatmeal

Traditionally nutty flavor and unique texture

Can help reduce cholesterol levels

this oatmeal is very good- doesn't become mushy like regular oatmeal when cooked and the grains are smaller in size as compared with steel cut oats. Good nutty taste too!

4OK; not as good as McCann'sJun 12, 2008
By Pennsylvania Reader
I am a big fan of hearty oatmeal. I use Quaker oats for baking, but for a winter's breakfast, I want substance and flavor. I've been eating and loving McCann's Irish Oatmeal for years. I have tried and liked, but not loved, other steel-cut oats such as those from Bob's Red Mill, but I wondered if McCann's was the best, so I added this to an order I was already making. I'm glad I didn't pay extra shipping for it. This was disappointing. The oatmeal is blander in flavor and mushier in texture than steel-cut oats. If you like a softer, more traditional oatmeal, you might like it. The packaging is frustrating, with the liquid-to-oat ratio given in volume of water to weight of oats rather than a dry measure. This product is labeled for the U.K. market in which every kitchen has a scale, apparently, so you are on your own to figure out the best water-oats ratio. It cooks quickly, so it may be similar to McCann's quicker-cooking oats (in the box; I've never tried those). This bag is not resealable, so you will need a separate container or self-sealing bag to store it. Several months later, most of my package is in my freezer and I'll probably end up tossing it. If you are interested, this package weighs 1 kg and here is a price comparison: Alford Organic Pinhead Oatmeal $7.99/35.27 oz. = $0.227 per oz. vs. McCann's Irish Oatmeal (in package of 4 handy cans) $25.07/112 oz. = $0.223/oz + free shipping.

4Good Oats!Feb 10, 2009
By D. Osborne "sweet teeth"
I eat oatmeal every morning and I'm very particular about it. My favorite oats are the Haemlyn's Pin Head Oats. They're quick cooking and flavorful and have a nice chewy texture. The Oatmeal of Alford's Organic Pinhead Oats are almost as good. They cook way faster than McCann's and have more flavour and a better bite. I would recommend these oats if you like Haemlyn's and can't find it. I also like that the Alford's Oats are organic. I add flaxseed meal and nuts and berries and it's quite a delicious nutritious breakfast. I don't feel hungry until lunch and I've got plenty of energy.Organic Pinhead Oatmeal of Alford Stonecut Oatmeal by ChefShop.com

Novel variety of oatmeal. Good flavor, quick cooking. I presume it's as nutritious as traditional oatmeal. Costly shipping on one bag, so if you like it you will want to consider purchasing a bunch at once.
