1Terrible Sound QualityNov 24, 2010
By Mark Reed
I couldn't even listen to the whole concerto, the sound quality was so crackly and poor. I jumped at this download because of the low price and because I love Rachmaninoff, but my mistake was just reading the reviews and not listening to the samples myself. I won't make that mistake again. This recording was so poor that I deleted it from my iTunes library and wrote off the $3 as a loss. Very disappointed.

5Memorable performanceJan 04, 2010

I'm giving this 5 stars, not 4 because Richter is simply virtuoso here, and even tho the final Allegro Scherzando seems to me a bit frenetic. Still they pull it off and the orchestra is superb as well. According to the DGG site the recording is stereo AAA analog from 1959 which probably dates the technique as others have mentioned; and they sell the tracks for $2.69 each which would be over $8 for this album. A bargain here, I think.

5Fantastic!Jul 12, 2009
By G. W. James "Classical music lover"
Probably the best recording of this piece I've ever heard - what a pianist! Outstanding composition, Rachmaninoff was a genius. Love it, love it, love it.

1poor quality recording - only for the deep enthusiastMar 31, 2012

When, where, and how was this made? With wax cylinders or possibly pressed directly into a 78 rpm, 80 years ago? Sounds awful!

5Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of PaganiniMar 05, 2012
By M. KENT MCMAHAN
I ordered the CD on 2/10/12 and received it as expected in good shape on 2/15/12.

The recording quality was great but I was most impressed by the performance itself. I bought the CD after hearing the subject Rhapsody on the local classical radio station. I realized Rachmaninoff's 1934 composition was not the same as Listz's 1838 Etude, also based on Paganini's ca. 1807 Caprise No. 24. What struck me most was the exquisite beauty of Rachmaninoff's 18th variation - Andante cantabile (D flat major). That romantic melody was also in the Listz variations but I didn't hear it during a performance of Paganini's Caprise No. 24 for solo violin, so I wonder was it really there and perhaps just not played during that hearing? DJs sometimes play excerpts.

Finally, I found the presence of the the Dies Irae (the "day of wrath" plainchant from the medieval Mass of the Dead, to be out of place in the compostions of both Rachmaninoff and Listz. I also didn't hear it in the Paganini Caprise. But I love the chant.

I was also thrilled to find the subject performance on a CD with the wildly popular (at least to me) Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor.
